Outward Mindset Training and Resources

Transforming Mindsets and Strengthening CommunityThe Arbinger Institute is a global organization specializing in leadership development and personal growth. Their work focuses on a critical mindset shift: from an inward mindset—where people view others as obstacles or means to an end—to an outward mindset, which sees others as people with their own needs, goals, and challenges.

This outward perspective fosters collaboration, trust, and greater accountability, making it essential for improving relationships and achieving lasting success. Arbinger tools, such as the Tackle A Complex Problem and Start in the Right Way protocols, guide organizations to solve challenges while focusing on mutual outcomes.

At Napa Valley Unified School District (NVUSD), Arbinger principles are used to improve teamwork, communication, and leadership. By encouraging an outward mindset, NVUSD creates a culture where students, staff, and families feel valued, aligning with the district’s mission to build compassion and confidence.

Why Outward Mindset?

The Napa Valley Unified School District believes that human-centered organizations like school districts should create opportunities for authentic connections.

When  employees and students feel seen and valued for who they are and what they contribute, they are open, inspired, and motivated.By integrating the principles of Outward Mindset into our daily practices, we advance our district's mission of fostering confident, compassionate, and adaptable individuals—starting with ourselves and extending to our students. As we continue to develop as an organization, all employees will have the opportunity to attend an Outward Mindset workshop.
