Fact #1

63% of NVUSD students or 10,406 students attend schools that are at least 60 years or older.

Most of our schools were built after WWII during the economic boom. When you compare these sites to some of our newer sites the disparities in the facilities are glaring.
The good news is that the fundamental structural elements of these older campuses are in decent shape, but we need to maintain and update these campuses to avoid incurring major facility expenses.

Fact #2

Over 65% of our schools operate HVAC (heating, ventilation and cooling) systems that are over 20 years old.

These systems are loud, inefficient, and cannot accommodate the recommended filters (Merv 13 or higher) to protect our students from harmful particles circulating in the air. As we know, having healthy air circulating in our classrooms is crucial for the health of our students and staff, especially given the annual fire season and learnings from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Almost 40% of NVUSD students attend classes in aging portable classrooms.

Portables are not meant to be permanent structures for our students, and most portables in the district are over 20 years old. We prioritize moving students into permanent classrooms but some of our larger campuses rely on these spaces, and most are in need of replacement.

Fact #4

Over 78% of NVUSD students spend their day in schools that were last modernized over 20 years ago.

These campuses are in need of new roofs, HVAC, paint, carpet, electrical work, and basic classroom finishes and updates.

Fact #5

Most NVUSD schools do not have modern interior lighting in most classrooms, which, according to research, has a positive impact on teaching and learning.

Daylighting, meaning the controlled admission of natural light and direct sunlight is critical for teaching and learning. Lighting should also be updated to include the most current LED for quality and efficiency. 

 “The classrooms with the most amount of daylighting are seen to be associated with a 20% to 26% faster learning rate, as evidenced by increased student test scores over one school year, compared to classrooms with the least amount of daylighting.”
