Transitional Kindergarten (TK)

Preparing our Youngest Learners for Success in School

NVUSD is pleased to announce the expansion of our highly regarded TK program! TK offers children the opportunity to learn social skills and the academic foundational skills necessary to succeed in school and provides children with a nurturing and safe classroom environment that encourages curiosity, creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, skill-building, and autonomy. Children will engage with their peers in whole group, small group and playgroup settings. TK is a low-stress, developmentally appropriate environment created to help children prepare for the rigors of Kindergarten.  TK is taught by a credentialed teacher. Each classroom also has an aide. The ratio of adults to students is 1:10. This allows for children to receive the extra attention and help they need to become capable, confident learners. The instructional day is Monday through Friday for 4 hours. Before and after-school childcare is available at most school sites.  We will now offer TK to students with birthdays between 9/2/2021 and 9/1/2022.

If my child starts TK at a school that is not my resident school, can they stay there for the rest of elementary?
You would need to utilize the open enrollment process when your child is entering Kindergarten.

If my child starts TK at a school that is not my resident school, do they have priority to return to their resident school for kindergarten?
Yes, for example, if your resident school is at capacity for TK and your child is placed at another campus, your child will automatically be enrolled at your school of residence for kindergarten.

How do I start the TK enrollment process?
If you live within the NVUSD boundaries please visit our school registration page.
If you live outside our district boundaries please read about our interdistrict transfer process.

Yes! Childcare is available from the end of the TK school day. Learn more and sign up here.

Will TK classrooms have a bathroom?

All TK classrooms are located near a bathroom. Teachers will encourage students to use the bathroom during breaks and will access additional staff to support bathroom needs throughout the program.

Does my incoming child need to be potty training to attend TK?

State legislation does not permit districts to deny enrollment to incoming TK students if they are not fully potty trained. However, we STRONGLY encourage you to potty train your child before the start of the school year. To learn more about potty training, read this page Potty Training: Tips, Tricks and Resources for Parents.
