Frequently Asked Questions During COVID-19

Q: How long will school facilities be closed?

A: As announced on April 2, NVUSD facilities and all other public school campuses throughout Napa County will remain closed through this school year. NVUSD’s last day of school is scheduled for Friday, June 5.

Q: Are NVUSD Facilities open during this time?

A: No, in order to comply with both the State of California and the Napa County Health Officer’s Shelter at Home order, NVUSD has closed all facilities including playgrounds, fields, tracks and sport courts. 

Q: Is NVUSD considering extending school into summer months?

A: No, per the California Department of Education, school districts in California will use the distance learning model and adhere to their regular academic calendar. 

Q: What are the expectations for Spring Break?

A: NVUSD’s Spring Break runs from April 6 - 10, at which time teachers will not be working. However, our central district employees and staff will be working remotely, per the shelter in place restrictions. Additionally, our food service support team will continue to distribute meals during the week. See the schedule here.

We encourage students to continue participating in learning activities, or check out some fun virtual field trips.

Initially at the onset of the school campus closures, NVUSD made continuous learning resources available to engage students, and while teachers remained available to support these efforts, no students were penalized for uncompleted work. As of April 13, NVUSD is providing a longer-term, comprehensive remote learning model that will require a high degree of participation by students and teachers.

Q: Is NVUSD taking student attendance during school closures?

The California Department of Education has relaxed the attendance criteria for students. Student attendance during live sessions will not be taken. During the period of school facilities closure, NVUSD will track student participation in learning activities as a matter of equity to ensure students are able to access distance learning. Schools will follow up with students who are not engaging in any of the learning activities.

Q: How can I communicate with my student's teacher?

A: All teachers have scheduled time for Office Hours during Distance Learning.  The best way to contact teachers and staff during school facilities closure is via email or ParentSquare as many staff do not have access to their school/office telephone. If you don’t know the email address of the teacher/staff member, please go to your school website for directory information.  If you wish to reach a person at the NVUSD district office, go to, Departments, to find the person you wish to contact.

Q: Now that school libraries are closed, are there additional resources available to help with my child's assignments?

A: Yes. NVUSD Library Services has selected and vetted many free online resources, including Brittanica, Overdrive, and Napa Library, to name just a few. You can find them here:

Q: How is NVUSD supporting my child who has an Individual Learning Plans (IEP)?

A: We realize how challenging this is for students, and especially children with additional learning needs. Special Education teachers are here to help provide supplemental support to students on their caseloads, in keeping with the goals described in each student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP) Please see page 7 in the distance learning guide for more detailed information.

Q: What does "synchronous" vs. "asynchronous" mean?

A: "Synchronous" essentially is the same as "real-time -- meaning interactions between teachers and students will take place happen in live, at the same time. Students virtually attend class together via video conference, livestream, or chat. Effective remote instruction requires a blend of synchronous contact and asynchronous study/work. 

"Asynchronous" on the other hand may be online, but without real time interaction. This is a time when students independently engage in class materials and complete work at their own pace, typically within a given timeframe, often using online discussion boards to drive student-to-student engagement. 

Please note: asynchronous instruction works best for deep learning, whereas synchronous instruction is essential for connecting and maintaining relationships.

Q: Is tutoring available for my student?

A: Families are encouraged to take advantage of public library resources using their Student OneCard ( One of the many great resources is a program called which offers live one-on-one tutoring sessions to students who need help.

Q: Where can I ask questions about the Distance Learning Plan?

A: Your student’s school principal should be able to answer your questions. You can also email

Q: How will my child’s work be graded?

A: All students will be provided feedback on their work during distance learning. Students are expected to complete work and communicate with their teachers.  End of the year grade reporting will be as follows beginning April 13:

  • Elementary:  Students will be provided summative comments (written or video conference).
  • Middle: Students will receive a Credit/No Credit grade for the final trimester (semester at Harvest MS).
  • High: Students will receive a Credit/No Credit grade for the final semester.

Q: What does a credit/no credit grade mean and how will it impact my student’s GPA?

A: Students will be expected to engage in distance learning to earn a grade of "CR" (credit) for courses. The grade of credit will not be calculated into the GPA.

Students who took AP courses will have their GPA weighted for the first semester of the year.  A grade of “CR” in the second semester will not raise or lower their GPA. We realize we have students who were working very hard to improve their GPAs with weighted course work this semester.  They will have another opportunity to demonstrate mastery of the course through the new AP tests being offered by the College Board.

Q: Will there be high school finals?

A: No, due to the disruption in learning this semester, there will be no final exams.

Q: What does “work toward proficiency” mean?

A: “Work toward proficiency” means that a student has shown effort to engage in distance learning by completing assignments, participating in video sessions, emailing the teacher or any other means of interaction with the teacher. 

Q: Will credit/no credit impact graduation eligibility for seniors?

A: No. Students on track to graduate will, and those with extreme hardships related to COVID-19, are encouraged to reach out to their counselors for guidance.

Q: How will credit/no credit impact admissions or eligibility for college?

A:  COVID-19 is an international public health crisis. There is not a state or a nation that has not been impacted.  The fact is that many students in the United States are no longer attending school. Some districts have made the shift to distance learning and others are still struggling.  To that end, we have been assured by the institutions of higher education in California and across the nation that moving to credit/no credit this semester will not impact college eligibility. 

In an emergency distance learning environment, a credit/no credit grade is the most equitable approach to quantifying student learning and enables educators to focus less on tracking “points” and more on preparing students for the next level.  As the COVID-19 crisis escalates, we need to ensure that we honor learning without putting undue pressure on our students and families.  

The State Board of Education (SBE), California Department of Education (CDE), California State University (CSU), University of California (UC), California Community Colleges, and independent nonprofit colleges and universities have stated that they will accept credit/no credit grades in lieu of letter grades for A-G high school courses completed in winter/spring/summer 2020.

Q: How is the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) evaluating Emergency Distance Learning? 

A:  In response to questions regarding schools that have moved to distance or e-learning environments, the NCAA Eligibility Center released a statement stipulating that the NCAA will not require a separate review of distance or e-learning programs utilized by schools with NCAA-approved core courses that have moved to distance or e-learning environments for Spring/Summer 2020 terms.

Students are encouraged to complete their NCAA-approved core courses through the channels of instruction provided or recommended by their school, district or state department of education.

Q: How will credit/no credit impact placement for subsequent courses?  

A:  Many of the course and program placement decisions for our students were already underway, prior to the transition to emergency distance learning.  However, teachers will continue to gather evidence of learning to inform placement and students will be expected to work toward proficiency during distance learning. In this environment, communication between students and teachers will be critical. 

Q: Will elementary also receive credit/no credit grades?

A:  Elementary school students will receive a brief summary of their child’s academic progress. More information on this will be sent in the coming weeks.

Q: Why did NVUSD not implement a choice option for students?

A: In recognition of the anxiety, stress, and inherent educational inequities that exist across our nation, institutions of higher education are promoting a credit/no credit model as the most equitable approach to codifying student learning. A choice option between letter grades or credit/no credit would not remedy these inequities and could lead admissions officers to rank students who selected the credit/no credit option lower. In short, a choice option would not “hold students harmless” for circumstances beyond their control during this unprecedented time. This includes students who may struggle to process new material or demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of course content under these extraordinary circumstances. Some of our students may experience even greater family and economic challenges, while others may be significantly impacted by COVID-19 and unable to sufficiently engage in distance learning. 

Q: If schools remained closed, what will NVUSD do for promotions and graduations?

A: High School graduation is a huge milestone for our students, as are promotions from 5th and 8th grade. We are devastated by the current health crisis in many ways, and also in interrupting these important and sentimental celebrations. Our last resort is cancellation -- so we are hopeful to find a way to postpone all celebrations until it is safe to have them. We are discussing different scenarios and are convening a group of principals, students, teachers and parents to discuss and determine a plan for end of year celebrations. We will keep you updated as we know.

Q: What about Cap and Gown, and Yearbooks?

A: Along with determining how to handle celebrations, we will have our committee review how to honor these traditions and memorabilia. Please stay tuned for how NVUSD can support your student with these items.

Q: Will spring sports be delayed?

A: We know our coaches and athletes are hoping to resume their sport as soon as is safe. However, based on the recent statements issued by Governor Newsom and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, and schools turning to distance learning for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year, the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) has made the decision to cancel spring Section, Regional, and State Championship events. Q: My child needs a chromebook, where do I go? I have a question about getting my child's chromebook.

Q: How can I get access to free WiFI?

A: Comcast has made Xfinity WiFi hotspots available to anyone who needs them for free – including non-Xfinity Internet subscribers. Look for the “Xfinity WiFi” network from your device, connect to it and launch your browser.

Q: Who is eligible for the NVUSD free meal program?

A: Any NVUSD student 18 years and younger is eligible to receive free fresh and nutritious lunch and breakfast items, regardless of which school they attend. Learn more here.

Q: How long will NVUSD be distributing food?

A: Grab-and-go, drive-up breakfast and lunch service will be available every Monday and Thursday as long as school closures are in effect. This includes Spring Break. Please visit our emergency food program page for more information.

Q: What safeguards are in place at the meal distribution sites?

A: NVUSD is following Department of Public Health guidelines, including hand hygiene, wearing gloves, and washing and sanitizing all surfaces frequently. Only trained NVUSD staff are engaged in the process, and all individuals are required to practice social distancing at our meal sites.


The district is primarily using our communication tool, ParentSquare, to update families with important information.
