Napa Valley Unified School District Celebrates Widespread Student Achievement and Growth
The Napa Valley Unified School District (NVUSD) is proud to announce student achievement and academic growth across the district, as reflected in the latest state assessment (CAASPP/CAST) data. The results show district-wide gains in English Language Arts (ELA), mathematics, and science.
From the previous year, NVUSD has shown impressive overall growth of 4 percent in English Language Arts and nearly 2 percent growth in both mathematics and science
This positive trend is evident at the school level, with the majority of schools demonstrating improvement:
-
17 NVUSD schools grew in ELA
-
13 NVUSD schools grew in Math
-
15 NVUSD schools grew in Science
NVUSD schools also outperformed the state’s growth in ELA, achieving double the growth in English Language Arts (ELA), while showing gains in line with state growth in both math and science.
NVUSD middle schools have been a key driver of this success, with every middle school in the district showing growth in ELA. Notably, Unidos Middle School increased its ELA scores by over 10 percent, a standout achievement. All NVUSD middle schools also made positive gains in math, and every middle school either held steady or showed significant growth in science.
When compared to Mayacamas Countywide Charter Middle School, every NVUSD middle school outperformed the charter school in ELA. All but one NVUSD middle school achieved the same in math. NVUSD also demonstrated greater overall growth in both ELA and math than neighboring basic-aid, community-funded districts in both St. Helena and Calistoga—even though those districts receive two to three times more funding per student.
Improvements were also seen in NVUSD elementary and high school scores. Elementary assessments test 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders in ELA and math, and 5th graders in science. High school assessments test 11th-grade students in ELA and math, and 12th graders in science.
Napa High School showed tremendous growth with an 11 percent increase in ELA, a 7 percent increase in math, and a 6 percent increase in science scores. Nearby schools were not far behind. Napa Valley Independent Studies showed a 6 percent increase in math and 9 percent in science, and American Canyon High School showed growth in all three content areas, with growth of 4 percent in ELA, 6 percent in math, and 19 percent in science.
Elementary schools also improved. Vichy and Napa Junction Elementary Schools showed the highest growth in ELA of 10 percent and 8 percent, respectively. Northwood, Vichy, and Phillips Elementary Schools showed the highest growth in math of 6 percent, 4 percent, and 4 percent, respectively. Donaldson Way, NVLA, and Shearer showed notable growth in science of 10 percent, 5 percent, and 5 percent, respectively.
“The achievement and growth in ELA, math, and science showcase the hard work and dedication of our staff and students,” shared Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services Dr. Monica Ready. “Last year we implemented a new strategic plan, and these results make clear both the progress we’ve achieved and the areas where we will continue to grow, guided by data-driven decisions to strengthen instruction for every student in NVUSD.”
"We are incredibly proud of our students, teachers, and staff for their hard work and dedication," said Superintendent Dr. Rosanna Mucetti. "Our strategic efforts, including the middle school redesign, have made our district financially stable. This stability, in turn, allows us to provide the educational programming and resources that benefit our students most. The results speak for themselves.”
“I am proud of this progress, and the focused work it represents,” shared Board of Education President Eve Ryser. “Our school district prioritizes student-centered decisions that are based on data, and we continue to see a positive impact. These results demonstrate our commitment to ensuring that we are meeting the promise of our strategic vision, supporting students in becoming confident, compassionate, and adaptable adults who are well prepared for life and become inspiring advocates for themselves and their community.”
