Get to Know Board President Cindy Watter

On December 14, 2023, NVUSD’s Board of Education approved Trustee Cindy Watter’s nomination to Board President for the 2024 calendar year. Trustee Watter replaces Trustee David T. Gracia, who now assumes the role of Past President. Trustee Eve Ryser was also approved as Board Vice President and Trustee Dr. Lisa Chu as Board Clerk.

Over the last 33 years, Board President and Area 3 Trustee Cindy Watter has given back to the NVUSD community in myriad ways. A northern California native, Trustee Watter taught English at Napa High and English and Social Studies at American Canyon Middle School, retiring from the District in 2015. As a third-generation teacher, Trustee Watter feels her “kindergarten-graduate school public education opened the world to her and her family and is proud to support education by serving as a public school board member.” She is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley with a bachelor's degree in Comparative Literature and earned her teaching credential from San Francisco State University. In addition to serving on the NVUSD Board of Education, she is active with the UC Master Gardeners of Napa County (president emerita) and the Lewis Carroll Society of North America. She is also the proud parent to two Napa High School graduates and enjoys reading, gardening, cooking, sewing, and traveling.

The NVUSD community remains thankful for its hardworking and committed Board of Education. The Board’s commitment to strong governance and steadfast engagement is apparent through all they accomplished last year, led by Past President Gracia, and the many accomplishments of the past five years.  Click here to understand how NVUSD’s Board of Education approaches its governance responsibilities,  or here to learn a little more about our Trustees,  or here to see our Trustees in action in and around our community.

Guiding Coalition #3 and Community Installation

Exciting times indeed at NVUSD! Last weekend, New Technology High School was buzzing with energy as students, staff, and our wider community gathered for the third session of the Guiding Coalition. This is all part of our journey towards a Strategic Vision (Instagram | Facebook) that truly reflects the aspirations of our families, staff, students, and the broader community for the education of our students. We've been hard at work, pouring over 70,000 data inputs from you, our community, to shape the drafts of our Graduate, Adult, and System portraits.

But wait, there's more! On March 16, we're taking a significant step forward. We'll be showcasing the latest drafts of our Graduate, Adult, and System portraits alongside our core values at the NVUSD Ed Center, located at 2425 Jefferson Street. From 10:00 am to 1:00 pm, join us in celebrating our achievements and discussing our bright future.

This is your chance to see the vision coming to life and to share your thoughts on how we can continue to build a district that empowers every student and staff member. Your participation is crucial as we embark on crafting our next five-year strategic plan. Let's come together to honor our past, embrace the present, and look forward to an even brighter future for NVUSD. See you there!

Districtwide Faculty Day of Learning, March 8

On March 8  our district staff will gather together for a day of learning.  Our district-wide professional learning day is focused on the Power of Collective Impact in every district classroom and school as well as deepening our use of effective instructional practices.
Laizah Coronado Shines as BCGNV Youth of the Year

Big cheers for Laizah Coronado of Napa High School, winner of the BCGNV Youth of the Year Award! The celebration of the finalists highlighted the fruitful collaboration between NVUSD's Extended Learning Opportunity Program and the Boys and Girls Club of Napa Valley. It showcases how our partnership cultivates exceptional leaders. The award ceremony, with Deputy State Superintendent Abel Guillén as the keynote speaker, was a celebration of our students' leadership and dedication.

Meet all the finalists at Help us celebrate all our finalists by liking the California Department of Education's social media post from the evening. Find it in our story on Facebook and Instagram. Together, we're nurturing bright futures and building a community of leaders.

Board of Education Students of Month

SAT Day - Change of Date

Napa Valley Unified School District (NVUSD) believes that ALL students should have access to opportunities for college and career readiness.  With this in mind, NVUSD offers the SAT during the regular school day, free of charge to all high school juniors.  New this year, the SAT is now a shortened (two hour and 15 minutes) digital exam administered to students on  April 3 on an opt-in basis. Please note the change of date. If your child is a high school junior, they still have time to sign up. Look for more information about this opportunity from your school site. Want to practice? Check out the free Khan Academy SAT Prep today.
