Vichy Elementary Recycle Rangers Win Recycling Leadership Award
Vichy Elementary School recently received the JD Fullner Recycling Leadership Award, recognizing their outstanding efforts in waste reduction and proper waste sorting. This prestigious award, given by Napa Recycling and Waste Services, highlights leaders in recycling and composting within Napa County.
Principal Sally Zikmund started Vichy’s recycling program nearly a decade ago when she was a teacher at the school. "We started this program nearly ten years ago with a small group of second graders and a big dream to make a difference. Seeing how our students have embraced recycling and made it a part of their daily routine is truly inspiring. This award is a testament to their dedication and the strong sense of community we have here at Vichy Elementary." Initially, she worked with second graders, her Recycle Rangers, providing hands-on learning experiences, including visits to the City of Napa Recycling Center. These early initiatives have built a strong, sustainable program that thrives today.
Students, staff, and custodians at Vichy Elementary continue this important work daily. Head custodian Mirza Ventura ensures that waste is sorted correctly. "Working with the students every day to ensure our waste is properly sorted has been incredibly rewarding. Their enthusiasm and commitment to recycling make my job easier and more meaningful. I’m proud to be part of a team that cares so much about protecting our environment." Sally and Mirza guide students in sorting their trash, with Mirza providing the final check to ensure everything is properly separated.
Mrs. Zikmund and two fourth-grade students were honored by the Napa County Board of Supervisors and received the JD Fullner Recycling Leadership Award, a certificate of Congressional Recognition from Congressman Mike Thompson's office, and a certificate of recognition from State Senator Bill Dodd. They also received an award of $500. The JD Fullner Recycling Leadership Award honors those who excel in reducing landfill waste through effective recycling and composting. Napa Recycling and Waste Services conducts audits and surprise inspections to ensure program compliance and effectiveness. Winners are chosen based on their commitment to diverting waste from landfills and maintaining high standards in recycling and composting practices (Napa Recycling and Waste Services) (City of Napa).
This award is a testament to Vichy Elementary's dedication to environmental sustainability. Their ongoing efforts not only foster environmental awareness but also instill lifelong habits in students, preparing them to be responsible stewards of the planet.
