Middle School Science

Middle school science in NVUSD follows the California Next Generation Science Standards (CA NGSS) using an Integrated Model. Rather than focusing on a single branch of science each year, students explore aspects of Life Science, Earth and Space Science, Physical Science, and Engineering in every grade level (6, 7, and 8). This interdisciplinary approach allows students to see the connections between different scientific fields as they build complexity year over year.

Our curriculum, featuring the Discovery Education Science Techbook, shifts the focus from simply "learning about" facts to "figuring out" how the world works. This reflects our goal of ensuring students are future ready by developing the habits of mind used by real-world scientists and engineers.

Key features of the program include:

  • Phenomena-Based Learning: Lessons are anchored in real-world observations that prompt students to ask "why" and "how," leading them to plan their own investigations.

  • Three-Dimensional Learning: Students master core scientific ideas while simultaneously practicing skills like data analysis, mathematical modeling, and evidence-based argument.

  • Hands-On & Virtual Exploration: Students engage in immersive labs and virtual interactives that bring abstract concepts to life, from exploring ecosystems to testing physical forces.
